Stormy weather
  1. Always research changing weather conditions and shoot from inside a safe structure or vehicle if things turn nasty.
  2. A durable, heavy-weighted tripod is essential in stormy or windy weather
  3. Thick cloud cover will impact your exposure times. Use slower shutter speeds, wider apertures and higher ISOs.
  4. In cold climates batteries will drain quickly. Always keep a spare close to your body to maintain its full power.
  5. It’s hard to predict where lightning will strike, so ensure you capture using a wide-angle lens with a narrow aperture.
  6. Exposing your kit to the elements will take its toll over time, so ensure it’s adequately protected by using a rain sleeve and safely storing it in a weatherproof bag.
  7. The elements and extreme weather shots rely on contrast to stand out. Consider converting some of your captures to monochrome for more impact.
  8. If you’re shooting in damp or wet weather, add a small handful of dry rice grains to your camera bag, they will absorb moisture and help to preserve your kit.
  9. When you’re shooting weather, continually adjust the perspective you’re shooting from to cover the scene from varying angles.
  10. Always research weather conditions thoroughly and check for changes regularly on a shoot. look out for temperature, wind speed and other events.
  11. Use your lens hood during a shoot to reduce the amount of watermarks on the end of your lens. You can use the photoshop Clone Stamp to remove them later.
  12. Use compositional rules such as lead-in lines and the rule of thirds to balance the frame. however, don’t be afraid to break them from time to time too!
  13. It can be difficult to expose evenly when the landscape contrasts heavily with the sky. Use a graduated neutral density filter on your lens to overcome this.
  14. Dramatic skies can dominate the frame, so try including the landscape for context.
  15. Not all weather events can be captured. Try capturing moving trees or structures with slow shutter speeds to represent high winds.
